Platform Digest 2021.25: On New (Infra)Structures

👋 On time for your weekend: a round-up of this week's most remarkable stories at the intersection of #ecosystem#innovation and #platform#organisation.

Vehicle thinking - How to win in the creator economy

More importantly, and this is where the creator economy comes in, individuals can engage in vehicle thinking now. Organizational tools, which were largely available to large organizations to manage the agency of internal labor are democratised, allowing individuals to create the organizational architecture needed to pool third party agency and assets. Individuals can now benefit from the same leverage that organization traditionally benefited from.

The promised land of the singing frog

After a few decades in which giant aggregators have become the dominant marketplaces while original media companies often seem relatively small, this framework is a reminder that the most successful marketplaces are always media marketplaces—for social media, for beautiful images of houses, for whatever helps one person’s unique, non-fungible taste somehow match with another’s. The internet itself becomes the greatest media marketplace here by allowing us to connect across the globe to others who share our own idiosyncrasies, even as it teases us that, inevitably, there’s always an n+1th option out there, just waiting, if only we can keep up the search.

Technology Saves the World

The internet also provided human connection. Our social media platforms delivered under considerable strain, keeping isolated people connected online even when they couldn’t be with one another in person. This mattered most intensely for people suffering from COVID or other health problems through the pandemic. Again, one has to imagine the counterfactual, of a world of only letters and expensive phone calls, to understand how much our modern technology improved our quality of life through this period.

A personal journey of overcomplicating the platform economy narrative, and an invite to start crafting a much simpler narrative of authenticity, uniqueness, and multiplayer success—July 1, The NTWK
