Curation: How to Beat Negative Network Effects

When most people talk about network effects, the unstated assumption is that they are positive. This is often, but not always true. There are two types of negative network effects that can exist in networks built on software — network pollution and the presence of bad actors. As a result, startups need to put in place curation mechanisms to mitigate these negative network effects and enhance positive ones. This can be accomplished via five possible curation mechanisms, each of which has its own strengths and weaknesses — embedded curation, user-controlled curation, manual curation, community curation, and automated curation.
